In 2021, the MWMO partnered with Plymouth Youth Center (PYC) Arts & Technology High School and local artist Susan J Sperl to develop a collaborative art exhibit that would connect Sperl’s felted sea creatures with the Mississippi River, conveying the importance of protecting water quality in the river so as to protect wildlife and habitat in the entire watershed and the Gulf of Mexico into which it flows.
With support from the MWMO, PYC art students worked with teaching artist Jack Kotz to create concept designs and the produce work that illustrates connections between stormwater runoff in Minneapolis, the health of the Mississippi River, and the ultimate impact on the sea creatures in the ocean.
Voices from the Water, part of the Westminster Gallery’s 20th Anniversary celebration, is an exhibit composed of felted wool sea creatures by Susan J Sperl, comic art illustrating efforts to protect the river from plastic and trash pollution by PYC students, and photographs documenting the process and collaboration.
