One of the MWMO’s first major capital projects, the Heritage Park project implemented a stormwater “treatment train” in the middle of a 145-acre North Minneapolis housing development. A variety of underground and above-ground structures were built to remove pollution from stormwater runoff. The project represented a rare opportunity to correct years of environmental degradation by introducing natural stormwater filtration into a heavily urbanized area.
The treatments, which include grit chambers to remove particles and debris, trench forebays to collect sediment, level spreaders to slow runoff, and filtration basins to remove pollutants, also treat stormwater from several surrounding areas. Stormwater runoff that had been flowing directly into the Mississippi River is now diverted into the Heritage Park treatment system.
